Construction Industry Scheme (CIS)
If you are working in the construction industry then you probably have to comply with the Government’s Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) when it comes to receiving payment.
CIS is a government scheme with a specialised set of rules laid out to handle payments made by contractors to subcontractors for construction and civil engineering work.
CIS Sole Trader
To be a CIS sole trader you would need to demonstrate that you are in business on your own account and do not work under supervision, direction or control (SDC) for each contract you work on. Self-Employment Assessment (SEA) will be conducted to ensure that you are fully compliant with all relevant legislation. We do this for each assignment so that you have peace of mind you’re on the right solution and that the tax on all income is appropriately applied.

CIS Umbrella
CIS Umbrella helps those who work on construction projects under Supervision, Direction and Control (SDC). This fast and simple solution enables them to be paid through a compliant and trusted employment solution. The umbrella service is used when a worker is unable to pass the SDC assessment for the contract they are working on. It is also used by workers whose agency or end clients are unwilling to engage with sole traders as part of their supply chain commitments.
